Bilingual Preschool in Greenpoint, Brooklyn

Greenpoint is a bilingual neighborhood. Polish has been the dominant second language for generations. Spanish is now growing fast as new families move in. If you are a parent looking at preschool here, you are probably weighing whether your child will hear, see, and respect the language at home in their school day.

Three Models for Bilingual Preschool

There are roughly three approaches in Greenpoint and the wider area.

Full Immersion

The whole school day runs in the second language. Teachers, signage, songs, and snack time. Polish full-immersion preschools exist in Greenpoint though most cap enrollment quickly. Spanish full-immersion is rarer locally. Best fit for families who want fluent second-language outcomes and are comfortable with English exposure happening at home or later.

Dual Language

Two languages share the day. Some classrooms split by half-day, others rotate by topic or by week. Common in NYC public 3-K and pre-K dual-language programs. Strong outcomes in both languages when staffed well, but harder to deliver consistently without certified bilingual teachers.

English Primary with Exposure

English is the working language, second-language exposure happens through songs, stories, daily greetings, snack-time vocabulary, and weekly themed activities. Lower fluency outcomes than immersion or dual language, but high cultural fluency and a foundation a child can build on. This is what Gifted and Talented Kids does.

Why We Chose English Primary

Honest answer. Most Greenpoint families we talked to want their child to be school-ready in English, comfortable in the language of their first peer group, and respectful of the language they hear at home from grandparents or in the neighborhood. We are not the right place for a family that wants their child fluent in Polish or Spanish by age five. We are the right place for a family that wants their child to grow up confident in English while feeling proud of and connected to their bilingual roots.

What Bilingual Exposure Looks Like Day to Day

What Bilingual Exposure Does Not Promise

Your child will not leave our program speaking conversational Polish or Spanish unless they are also using the language at home with native speakers. Exposure is a foundation. It is not immersion. We are honest about that because we have seen too many marketing claims about bilingualism that disappoint families later.

Compared to Greenpoint Polish-Heritage Preschools

Several Polish-heritage preschools serve the neighborhood. They generally serve Polish-speaking families with deep cultural ties and commit to higher Polish fluency outcomes. We do not compete with them. If your home is Polish-speaking and you want your child fluent in Polish, those schools are your best fit. We are the right fit for English-primary families who want bilingual exposure as part of a Multiple Intelligences curriculum.

Compared to NYC 3-K and UPK Dual-Language Programs

NYC Department of Education runs dual-language Spanish and Mandarin programs in some 3-K and UPK sites. Our private program is not free, but offers smaller groups, Special Education support, and more individualized planning. Many families consider both. Read more on 3-K and UPK vs private preschool.
