NYC 3-K vs UPK vs Private Preschool: What Greenpoint Parents Need to Know
You've probably heard that NYC offers free preschool. And it does. 3-K for 3-year-olds, UPK for 4-year-olds. Zero tuition.
But "free" comes with trade-offs. Limited hours. Larger class sizes. A lottery system where your first-choice school is never guaranteed. And for working parents, 6 hours of care rarely covers a full workday.
This guide compares 3-K, UPK, and private preschool side by side so you can make an informed decision for your family in Greenpoint.
The Side-by-Side Comparison
| Factor | 3-K (Age 3) | UPK (Age 4) | Private Preschool |
|---|---|---|---|

What Is 3-K for All?
NYC's 3-K program launched in 2017 to provide free, full-day preschool for every 3-year-old. In Greenpoint, a handful of sites participate. You apply through MySchools NYC (myschools.nyc) starting in late winter for fall enrollment.
What you need to know:
- Application is a lottery. You rank your preferred schools, but placement depends on seat availability.
- Standard day runs roughly 8:00 AM to 2:20 PM. Some sites offer extended day until 6:00 PM.
- School year only (September through June). No summer unless the site offers it separately.
- Curriculum follows NYC DOE guidelines. Quality varies by site.
- Transportation is not provided for most 3-K programs.
What Is UPK (Universal Pre-K)?
UPK has been available in NYC since 2014 for all 4-year-olds. Greenpoint has several UPK sites, including within public schools and community-based organizations.
The structure is similar to 3-K: lottery application, 6-hour school day, school-year calendar. The main difference is that UPK is more widely available, so your chances of getting a nearby placement are better.
When Private Preschool Makes Sense
Private preschool fills these gaps:
- Full workday coverage. 3-K/UPK ends at 2:20 PM. If you work 9 to 5, you need afternoon care anyway.
- Year-round calendar. Summer gap? Private programs run through July and August.
- Smaller classes. 8-15 kids vs 18-20. More individual attention means faster development.
- Enrichment included. Music, dance, art, Spanish, STEM. No need to book separate classes on evenings and weekends.
- Specialized curriculum. Montessori, Multiple Intelligences, Reggio Emilia. Tailored to how your child learns best.
- Guaranteed spot. No lottery. You apply, you tour, you enroll. Done.
The Hidden Costs of "Free" Preschool
3-K and UPK are free. But the real cost of care for a working parent looks different.
If your 3-K site runs 8:00 AM to 2:20 PM:
- Afternoon babysitter (2:30 PM to 6:00 PM): $18-25/hour, roughly $1,400-1,950/month
- After school program (if available): $400-800/month
- Summer camp or separate care (June-August): $2,000-4,000 total
Add it up: "free" 3-K plus afternoon care plus summer camp can cost $2,000-3,000/month when averaged across the year. That's the same as a private program that covers it all.
Can You Combine 3-K/UPK With Private Care?
Yes, and many families do. The typical setup:
- Morning: child attends 3-K or UPK (8:00 AM to 2:20 PM)
- Afternoon: pickup by private daycare, nanny, or after school program
This works well if:
- Your 3-K/UPK site is near your afternoon care provider
- You can coordinate pickup logistics
- Your afternoon program offers the enrichment you want
At Gifted and Talented Kids, our After School Enrichment program (ages 5-7) is designed for this purpose. We also offer full-day programs for ages 2-5 if you prefer one location for the entire day.
Our Recommendation
There's no universally right answer. It depends on your schedule, budget, and priorities.
- Budget is the top priority? Apply for 3-K/UPK. Use a nanny share or family member for afternoon hours.
- Need full-day, year-round care? A private program is simpler and often comparable in total cost.
- Want enrichment and specialized curriculum? Private programs include it. Public programs generally don't.
- Want G&T test preparation? No public 3-K/UPK program specifically prepares for the NYC Gifted and Talented assessment. Some private programs do.
Full-Day, Year-Round, Enrichment Included
